crrravingzzz

Summer’s here and this is generally when you feel like slimming down. You know… time to lose the baby weight.

Course I thought all my rocking and bouncing and brisk walking with infantalotopus maximus was going to whip me into shape.

HOWEVER… As I write this, my waist remains sans abs.

Guess I picked up some bad habits during pregnancy. Oh the cravings!

To be fair, I was eating for two then and now I must keep up my intake to insure sufficient milk supply.

[My wife insists these excuses don’t really apply to dads]

After nine months of hearing the fridge go at odd hours and, like some Pavlovian shark, circling in for a snack, never mind the fact I’d just eaten, I have indeed lost all semblance of discipline.

In fact, when we checked into hospital for delivery I was damn worried. What if I’d packed on so much blubber, the midwife thinks I’m the one carrying? Throws me on a gurney, plugs in the epidural, starts yelling PUSH?

Even now, in the weeks since, I catch myself munching for fun.

And why not???

From our first breath, every cry, whimper, sniffle is medicated with a soothing breast. Teaching us suffering may be cured with food (or breasts?).

No wonder there’s so many stress eaters and binge drinkers. Or others fighting for control: bulimics, anorexics, al anonsense.

Man, that was some deep typing… I feel like a snack.

Mochi Growls Back

Overwhelmed with work and infant, I’ve finally agreed (after much begging on her part) to allow my boxer, Mochi, to take over.

[Pardon any mistakes… my dog translation skills are poor.]

Yo dawg! It’s Mochi!

Here's my observations:

Every night there is howling in our bedroom as Alpha tries using a sleep sheep to teach the baby to remain awake, alert and on guard. I dragged this contraption to my den last night and, using my paws, discovered it makes bizarre noises – rain, ocean, whale song – strange, but very relaxing.

Also...

The little one is horribly deformed – five fingers on its paws instead of four. These are so tiny (and scrumptious-looking), I think if I get a chance, I’ll chew them off as a favor. You know… save her the embarrassment when gets to high school.

And another thing, when I walk my humans, I am perplexed by how obsessed they are with doo-doo. Though I’ve repeatedly demonstrated how to squat on the grass, they stubbornly refuse to learn this technique. Instead, these modified primates praise me and stash my crap in blue bags! Without even sniffing! Though I’ve sometimes wondered what top dog does with these bags, I’m sure the answer is not good.

Finally, what I find most disheartening is my family's’ inability to lick themselves clean. For the record, I am volunteering to lick this baby head to toe... after I lick my botty and totty (cleanliness begins at home, right?).

The Excorcism Of Kaia Rose

…It wreaks havoc upon new parents…

Strikes when least expected…

There are no known cures to man…

For centuries, missionaries in the Yucatan have whispered its name in terror…

“El Colico”

Most babies experience some form of colicky behavior. Ours has taken it pro, lately working on her technique two–three times a day.

Mostly it’s my wife and her titanium nerves of… well titanium (twice the durability!) who coaches Kaia through. But even she has a tipping point and the task of facing our mite-y dragon falls upon my trembling shoulders.

“Sweetie? Can you take her for a minute?”

Oh no. Here we go. Take a deep breath. Grab the beads, book and holy water.

“Okay babe. I’m going in. Do not enter this room no matter what you hear. I will command Satan to release her soul!”

Brave words uttered before dashing into the chamber.

Silence.

Then…

Howling, roaring, keening….

“BEELZEBUUUB!” I bellow. “RELEASE HER!”

…retching, thrashing, gurgling…

I hug the baby to my chest while she moans, thankful of my cleavage that allows a pocket of air for her to breathe.

Time passes.

So much coddling, shaking and bouncing do I undergo that my hands fuse together in a crabber’s claw so gnarly, I could be the envy of those champion geezers from Deadliest Catch.

I begin the questioning of this baby:

“Why do you hate me so much?”
“Why does God hate me?”
“What have I done to deserve this?”

The questions quickly take a mundane turn:

“Who wants a little Zantac in their face?”
“Should we de-gas you with a thermometer?”
“Silencio, por favor charaap you face, mang!”

Wasted are our medicines, herbs, allergy-diets, white noise, wraps, wedges, binkies and swaddles. None seem to prevail against my weeping child.

Inevitably, we surrender to the commandments:

Thou shalt not sleep, but must hold the baby at all times, at the precise anti-puke angle from which she must never spew forth her life-sustaining sustenance.

Thou shall sway side to side, so much so, that even when no infant be present and thou art conversing with others, so must your swaying involuntarily continue.

Thou shalt banish from life all events that do not directly pertain to the feeding, soothing, burping or diaper removal for your angry sprout.

Amen.

Suddenly, there is a break in her cries and I flee the house, gripping the infant in my arms. Down the block we go.

Howling, roaring keening…

Cat, squirrel and raccoon scuttling for cover as we gallop along.

…retching, thrashing and gurgling.

The storm rages on. And on. And on.

The Hunger

Went to The Pump Station yesterday.

Naturally the baby whined during the drive, screamed while being weighed and whimpered through our lactation consult.

All the while I sat quietly, looking extremely concerned… and thinking:

"I'm starving. Wonder if I could sneak out and devour the grilled veggie wrap I have in my bag?”

Does this make me a bad dad?

Probably. Definitely.

"Maybe I could bounce her in the other room while you guys talk?"

"Sure honey. Why do you need your bag?"

"Ahm... just in case?"

In case I manage to scarf down a wrap without dripping baba ganoush on Kaia's forehead!

Guess I'd better hang on.

Thankfully Kaia slept for the ride home.

Fathers Day

Sunday was Fathers Day.

How am I doing?

I'm gonna judge the six week mark Pass/Fail.

If you're a babydaddy, and you’re around: Pass. If not: Fail.

So I passed! Booyah!

Operation Enduring Diaper Freedom

After 9/11, Homeland Security began using their color-coded terror advisories.

Green = good. Red = bad. Some thinktank douche obviously got stuck at a traffic light.

Anyway, the system has become vital for deciphering baby pooh.

My daughter’s turds come in such splashes of color I’ve begun to suspect she may, in fact, be a gifted expressionist.

Oh the greens and yellows and browns have triggered hours of discussion.

In search of a professional opinion, my wife hauled a loaded diaper into the doctor’s for analysis. As soon as the MD clocked the ticking grenade in her hand, he took cover.

"You brought a biohazard?"

“Yurg” our baby gurgles back happily. Translation: Fire in the hole.

And here you’ll notice a marked difference between babies and adults:

Whereas, if you or I were sh*tting our pants in public, there’d be some level of covertness to the act. Some effort at disguise or subterfuge. At the very least you’d keep your face strictly poker.

Not so for our little addition. Her arms flail, neck torques, eyes pop and then… comes the satisfactory FFFLURRRP below ground.

And now it’s time for a diaper change.

My wife and I proceed with care, avoiding the mid-change squirt... trying to contain her Seventh Generation diaper of mass destruction...

I guess we always expect an ambush. But that’s life in a baby’s Tora Bora.

When I Grow Up

Early mornings have become my new favorite.

Me, my dog, La NiƱa. Streets deserted… crows roosting on power lines… a warm breeze… a stale fart escaping the Ergo… ah.

Occasionally she’ll start crying and I’ll back up to someone’s bedroom so they can share in the bittersweetness of the moment.

I nod to the firemen, nurses, jailers and hobos coming off their nightshifts as we head into the beanery that has my morning crack.

Later, I will conjure pithy backstories for the joggers we pass:
Acne survivor
Running to cure dandruff
Soon to be divorced
‘80s spandex thief
Desperate has-been
Latvian porn star

However, today we saw a jogger who didn't fit any of the above categories. In fact, this woman looked pretty much how I imagined my daughter would look when she grows up. Solid, happy, healthy… a rarity in this town.

She wasn’t one of those butt-flossing aerobicists or powershaking yogis or anything. Just strong, fast, focused. The kinda chick who’d slap you with a heel of stoneground oatbread if you were on a date and weren’t paying attention.

I pat Kaia's muscular back. Oh that’ll be daddy’s girl alright.
